Godavari Botanical Garden Kathmandu
The National Botanical Garden at Godavari on the southern edge of the Kathmandu Valley is a green escape of 82 hectares containing over 2,000 plant species and a peaceful forest that feels far from the city.
Overview
Godavari National Botanical Garden lies 20km south of Kathmandu at the base of Phulchoki Hill (2,762m), the highest point of the Kathmandu Valley rim. The 82-hectare garden was established in 1962 and contains a rich collection of Himalayan, subtropical, and temperate species laid out across landscaped grounds and natural forest sections.
The garden is organised into sections: a Japanese rock garden, an orchid house, a cactus and succulent collection, medicinal herb beds, a fern section, and large areas of natural forest where the garden blends into the lower slopes of Phulchoki. The orchid collection is especially impressive in spring when the Himalayan species bloom.
Phulchoki above the garden is one of the best birdwatching sites in the Kathmandu Valley. A dirt road climbs to the summit through dense forest that harbours sunbirds, laughingthrushes, bulbuls, and various raptors. Birders from across Asia visit specifically for the forest species here.
The Godavari Kunda, a sacred spring below the hill, draws Hindu pilgrims especially during the Maha Shivaratri festival when thousands gather for ritual bathing. The spring is set in a pleasant wooded area with stone architecture.
