Eastern Nepal Circuit 7-Day Guide

The eastern Nepal circuit — from Biratnagar through Dharan, Ilam, and back via Koshi Tappu — covers some of Nepal's most spectacular and least-visited landscapes in seven days.

Day 1-2: Biratnagar and Dharan

Fly to Biratnagar and spend the afternoon orienting. The next morning, drive to Dharan (34km, 45 minutes), the hill city at the base of the Siwalik range. Dharan warrants a half-day: the Bijaypur Hill walk, the Dantakali Temple, and the old bazaar give a feel for the eastern hills' distinct culture before you climb higher.

Day 3-4: Ilam Tea Country

Drive from Dharan toward Ilam (3-4 hours via Birtamod), climbing from the plains into the tea-covered hills of the far east. Spend two nights in Ilam to allow a full day for estate visits, factory tours, and the Mae Pokhari wetland walk. Buy first-flush tea directly from the estates.

Day 5: Taplejung Corridor

The adventurous version of this circuit drives further north toward Taplejung district, approaching the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. Even without trekking into the high mountains, the road toward Phungling (Taplejung district headquarters) passes through extraordinary hill landscape with views toward the world's third-highest mountain. This is genuinely remote; accommodation is basic.

Day 6: Koshi Tappu via Itahari

Loop south from Dharan through Itahari to the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, a 175 square kilometre wetland in the Koshi River floodplain. The reserve protects the last population of wild water buffalo (arna) in Nepal and is among Asia's top waterbird habitats with over 500 species recorded. Boat rides on the Koshi channels and morning walks through the grassland are the main activities.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Day 7: Return to Biratnagar

A final morning at Koshi Tappu for birding before returning to Biratnagar for your departure flight. Koshi Tappu's dawn light over the river channels, with the Himalayas visible to the north in clear weather, is one of those scenes that stays with you.

Sajilo supports transport in the eastern Terai cities including Biratnagar, Dharan, and Birtamod, making the logistical connections between these points smoother.

Practical Notes

This circuit is practical October through May. Monsoon (June-September) makes the hill roads toward Ilam and Taplejung challenging. A rental vehicle or private driver for the full 7 days is the most practical format.

FAQ

Can this circuit be done by public transport?
Most legs have public bus connections but they are time-consuming and infrequent. A private vehicle makes the circuit manageable in 7 days; public transport would require at least 10.

Do I need permits for Kanchenjunga viewpoint areas?
Restricted Area Permits are required for trekking inside the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. Driving to Taplejung town does not require permits.

Is the eastern circuit suitable for birdwatchers?
Highly. Koshi Tappu and Ilam are both world-class birding sites. The transit landscapes between them also hold species not found elsewhere in Nepal.
