Lower Dolpo Trek Remote Nepal Adventure

Lower Dolpo is a restricted trekking region of extreme remoteness, ancient Bon monasteries, and landscapes unlike anywhere else in Nepal.

Lower Dolpo (the restricted southern portion of Dolpo district) offers some of Nepal most raw and uncrowded trekking — fewer than 2,000 trekkers visit per year.

Overview

The main circuit runs from Juphal airport (2,475m) to Phoksundo Lake (3,611m), the deepest lake in Nepal, and back via variations through Ringmo village and the Phoksundo Gorge. The standard trek is 12-16 days. Maximum altitude is around 4,900m at the passes above Phoksundo. Bon monasteries, which predate Buddhism in Nepal, are the cultural centrepiece — Shey Gompa in Upper Dolpo (which requires an additional USD 500 Upper Dolpo permit) is the most famous. Fly to Juphal from Nepalgunj; book your Kathmandu-to-Nepalgunj connection via Sajilo or by air.

Getting There

Fly Kathmandu–Nepalgunj (1 hour) then Nepalgunj–Juphal (45 min). The Juphal flights are weather-dependent — allow buffer days.

Key Highlights

Phoksundo Lake is extraordinary: turquoise-blue glacial water with a sheer cliff monastery above and no motor boats. The Phoksundo River gorge walk is one of the finest canyon hikes in the Himalaya. Ringmo village has maintained an almost unchanged lifestyle for centuries.

Tips

  • Restricted Area Permit USD 10/day for Lower Dolpo; Upper Dolpo USD 50/day.
  • Full camping setup required above Phoksundo — no teahouses.
  • Hire a registered agency in Kathmandu — the restricted permit cannot be self-obtained.

FAQ

When is Lower Dolpo open? Year-round technically, but October-November and March-April offer the best conditions. Monsoon is less impactful here than in other regions.

Is Upper Dolpo worth the extra permit cost? The Shey Gompa and Crystal Mountain area is extraordinary — if budget allows, Upper Dolpo is transformative.

How much does the full trip cost? Budget USD 3,000-5,000 including flights, permits, guide, camp crew, and food for 14 days.
