Gangetic Dolphin Karnali River: Viewing Guide

The Karnali River flowing through Bardia National Park supports Nepal's most accessible population of Gangetic river dolphins. Here is how to plan a dolphin-watching visit.

Overview

The Gangetic river dolphin (Platanista gangetica) is South Asia's only freshwater dolphin and is listed as Endangered globally. Nepal's Karnali River, particularly the stretch flowing through and below Bardia National Park near Chisapani, supports a confirmed population of 40–60 individuals — one of the healthiest remaining sub-populations in the species's range.

Dolphins are most visible at Chisapani, where the Karnali emerges from the Churia hills into the Terai plains, creating deep pools that concentrate fish. Early morning canoe trips from local guides based at Chisapani village produce reliable sightings between November and April. The animals surface frequently in the calm morning water, their curved dorsal fin and blunt snout breaking the surface every 30–60 seconds.

Bardia Wildlife Society and several local operators in Chisapani run dedicated dolphin-watching canoe sessions of two to three hours. These are best combined with a Bardia safari as a day extension — Chisapani is approximately 40km from Thakurdwara, Bardia's main visitor hub.

The monsoon season (June–September) floods the Karnali and disperses dolphins widely, making sightings unpredictable. Stick to October–April for reliable encounters.

FAQ

Do the dolphins come close to the canoe? Yes, often within 5–10 metres. They are not shy of slow-moving watercraft.

Are there also gharials in the Karnali? Yes, the Karnali holds both gharials and mugger crocodiles. Chisapani is excellent for all three species.

How do I reach Chisapani from Kathmandu? Fly to Nepalgunj, then drive 90 minutes. Or take an overnight bus from Kathmandu to Ambassa and a short onward jeep.
