Overview

Dhulikhel is a small Newari town at 1,550m on the eastern edge of the Kathmandu Valley, 30km from the capital on the Arniko Highway toward Tibet. Its elevation and position give it a clear view of the eastern Himalayas including Gauri Shankar, Melungtse, and the Rolwaling range โ€” peaks that are harder to see from Kathmandu city itself.

The old town of Dhulikhel has a modest Durbar Square with a Harisiddhi Temple and a preserved street of traditional Newari architecture. It is quieter than Bhaktapur and fewer tour groups pass through. The town square has an unhurried community feel with elders sitting in doorways and children playing on temple steps.

A 1-hour walk above the town leads to Kali Temple on a ridge (1,750m) with a 270-degree mountain panorama. The trail passes through pine and rhododendron forest and is well-marked. Sunrise from the ridge on a clear morning includes Langtang, Rolwaling, Gaurishankar, and on exceptional days even Everest to the northeast.

From Dhulikhel, a 2-3 hour trail connects to Namobuddha monastery, making a linear walk between the two sites possible with a vehicle pickup arranged at the monastery end. Sajilo can help arrange the return transfer.

FAQ

Is Dhulikhel worth visiting if I have already been to Nagarkot?
Yes. The mountain range visible from Dhulikhel skews more eastern (Rolwaling, Gaurishankar) while Nagarkot shows more of the central and eastern Himalaya including Everest. The old town character is also distinct.

How long is the drive from Kathmandu?
45 minutes to 1 hour depending on traffic leaving the valley. The road is paved and in good condition.
