Dharan: Eastern Nepal Hill City Guide
Dharan is one of Nepal's most pleasant cities, a clean, organized hill settlement with a strong Limbu and Rai cultural identity and excellent access to the Koshi hills beyond.
Overview
Dharan sits at the base of the Siwalik Hills, 34km north of Biratnagar at an elevation that makes it noticeably cooler than the plains below. It was developed as a British Gurkha recruitment centre and retains an orderly, well-maintained character unusual in Terai towns. Wide streets, a clean central park, and a functioning city plan make walking pleasant.
The BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences gives Dharan a student population that animates the cafes and restaurants around the main chowk. The city has a genuinely multiethnic composition: Rai and Limbu communities from the hills, Maithili and Tharu from the plains, and a significant community of Gurkha veterans' families who returned from British service.
Bijaypur Hill above the city offers a forest walk and views over the Terai extending to the Indian plains on a clear day. The Dantakali Temple (dedicated to Durga) on the hill is an active pilgrimage site. Below the hill, the city's old bazaar retains some traditional architecture and is excellent for local market browsing.
Dharan is the best base for excursions into the eastern hills. Hile, a market town 40km further north, sits on a ridge at 1,800m and marks the start of trekking routes into Makalu-Barun and the Kanchenjunga region. Sajilo operates in Dharan and can arrange onward transport into the hills.
