Damak and Eastern Terai Travel Guide
Damak in the Jhapa district of the eastern Terai is a quietly fascinating town shaped by its history as the centre of Nepal's Bhutanese refugee resettlement and its role as a regional tea and cardamom trading hub.
Overview
Damak is a mid-sized town in Jhapa district, the easternmost district of Nepal. It grew significantly from the 1990s onward as the site of the largest Bhutanese refugee camps in the region. At peak, over 100,000 Bhutanese refugees (predominantly of Nepali ethnic origin expelled from Bhutan) lived in seven camps around Damak. The ongoing resettlement programme to third countries has substantially reduced this population, but the cultural and commercial impact on Damak remains visible.
The town has a commercial energy driven by the tea and cardamom trade from the surrounding Jhapa hills and the Ilam district to the north. Tea bought in Ilam passes through Damak on its way to Kathmandu and the Indian border. The weekly market has a character shaped by this trading history.
Jhapa district as a whole is Nepal's most densely productive agricultural zone, with flat, fertile land that produces rice, lentils, jute, sugarcane, and the beginnings of the hill belt's tea and cardamom. Traveling through rural Jhapa reveals a prosperous agricultural landscape distinct from both the hill districts and the drier western Terai.
The border crossings at Kakarbhitta (near Siliguri in West Bengal, India) make Jhapa the entry and exit point for overland travellers moving between Nepal and northeast India or Darjeeling. Kakarbhitta is 50km east of Damak.
