Sauraha Village: Base for Chitwan Safari

Sauraha is the tourist village on the edge of Chitwan National Park, a compact strip of lodges, restaurants, and activity operators strung along the Rapti River.

Overview

Sauraha functions as the main entry point and accommodation base for Chitwan National Park. The village sits on the northern bank of the Rapti River, with the park entrance on the southern bank accessible by dugout canoe or bridge. The riverbank itself is one of the best free wildlife-viewing spots in Nepal: mugger crocodiles sunbathe on the opposite bank, elephants cross at the shallows, and gharial (the long-snouted fish-eating crocodile) occasionally surface.

The main street runs parallel to the river with lodges at every price point from basic guesthouses to comfortable resorts with pools. Restaurants serve a mix of Nepali, Indian, and continental food; the quality is generally reliable at any establishment with a good river view.

The Elephant Breeding Centre near Sauraha (free to enter) houses breeding female elephants and their calves in a large natural enclosure. This is separate from the elephant-riding programmes that have faced ethical scrutiny; the breeding centre itself focuses on conservation.

Evening cultural programmes in Sauraha present Tharu stick dance and traditional music. These 45-minute shows are aimed at tourists but preserve performance forms that Tharu communities have practised for generations.

Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.

Use Sajilo for your transfer from Bharatpur (the nearest airport) or from the Narayanghat bus junction to Sauraha, especially with luggage when walking the last stretch is impractical.

FAQ

Can I visit Chitwan without staying in Sauraha?
Lodges exist inside the buffer zone with exclusive access. However Sauraha remains the most accessible base with the widest choice of accommodation and activity operators.

Is elephant riding ethical in Chitwan?
This is a contested question. Many operators have shifted to elephant-back free observation formats. Ask specifically whether elephants are chained overnight and whether calves are separated from mothers for training before booking any elephant programme.
