Chitwan National Park 2-Day Guide
Chitwan is Nepal's most accessible wildlife sanctuary and one of Asia's great conservation success stories. Two days gives you enough time to experience the jungle properly.
Getting There and Settling In
Chitwan National Park sits in the Terai lowlands about 150km southwest of Kathmandu. The tourist hub is Sauraha village on the northern bank of the Rapti River. Tourist buses from Kathmandu take 5-6 hours; private jeeps are faster. Arrive in the afternoon and use your first evening for an orientation walk along the riverbank where you can watch elephants bathing and spot mugger crocodiles on the opposite shore.
Day One: Jungle Activities
The park entrance is across the Rapti River from Sauraha. Jeep safaris penetrate the core park area, offering the best chance to spot the one-horned rhinoceros, which Chitwan has helped bring back from the edge of extinction. Early morning is peak wildlife activity. Bengal tigers are present but sightings require luck โ your guide will read fresh tracks and alert signs in the grass.
Canoe trips on the Rapti and Narayani rivers are excellent for birdwatching and crocodile spotting. Over 500 bird species have been recorded in Chitwan, making it a serious birding destination. The giant hornbill, Bengal florican, and various kingfisher species are among the highlights. Elephant grass towering four metres high lines the riverbanks and creates a true jungle atmosphere.
Walking safaris with an armed naturalist guide go deeper into the buffer zone. These 3-4 hour walks through sal forest and grassland feel very different from vehicle-based safaris. Every rustling grass tuft and fresh footprint becomes significant.

Day Two: Cultural Immersion and Tharu Village
Begin day two with another early morning jeep safari or canoe trip while the mist still clings to the river. After breakfast, visit a Tharu cultural programme. The Tharu are the indigenous people of the Terai who developed immunity to malaria over generations. Their stick dance (Danda Naach) is performed in the evenings at various cultural centres around Sauraha.
The Tharu Museum in Sauraha gives context to their traditions, architecture, and relationship with the jungle ecosystem. A walk through Bachhauli village shows the distinctive Tharu architecture: low mud homes with verandahs painted in geometric patterns.
Use Sajilo to arrange your transfer from Kathmandu to Sauraha or for the return journey, saving you the hassle of tourist bus timetables.
Wildlife Notes
One-horned rhinos are the most reliably spotted large mammal. Sloth bears, wild elephants, deer, monkeys, and over 100 butterfly species are also common. Camera with a 200mm+ lens recommended for wildlife. The park follows strict no-plastic rules.
FAQ
What is the best activity in Chitwan for first-time visitors?
The jeep safari into the core area gives the widest coverage and best rhino sightings. Pair it with a canoe ride for a complete experience of both land and river ecosystems.
Is Chitwan malaria-free?
The risk is low in the dry season (October to May) but some caution is warranted during and after monsoon. Consult a doctor about prophylaxis before travel and use mosquito repellent at dusk.
How many nights should I stay in Chitwan?
Two nights allow for three activity sessions (late afternoon arrival, full day two, morning of day three before departure). Three nights is ideal if you want a relaxed pace and multiple safari options.
