The Ancient Roots of Chhath

Chhath Puja is considered one of the oldest surviving Vedic rituals on earth, dedicated to Surya, the sun god, and his sister Chhathi Maiya. Unlike most Hindu festivals associated with temples and priests, Chhath is performed directly at rivers, ponds, and open water bodies. No priest is required. It is believed the ritual predates even the Vedic texts, with roots in the pre-Hindu spiritual traditions of the Gangetic plains.

The Four-Day Ceremony

Chhath unfolds over four consecutive days in October or November. The first day, Nahay Khay, begins with a ritual bath and a single meal of rice cooked with raw mango and bottle gourd. The second day, Kharna, involves a full day's fast broken at sunset with kheer and roti offered to the sun. The third evening, Sandhya Arghya, is the most dramatic: devotees stand waist-deep in water as the sun sets, offering bamboo baskets filled with fruit, sugarcane, and thekuwa sweets to the departing sun. They hold this position until the sun is fully below the horizon. The fourth morning, Usha Arghya, sees devotees return before dawn to offer the same to the rising sun.

Chhath in Nepal's Terai

The Madhesh region of Nepal's Terai plain shares deep cultural ties with the Indian state of Bihar, where Chhath originated. The festival here is celebrated with an intensity that rivals the largest Chhath gatherings in Patna or Varanasi. The banks of the Kamala, Bagmati, and Kosi rivers fill with millions of worshippers. Women in bright orange and yellow sarees stand silent in the current, their arms raised in offering.

Witnessing Chhath

The most accessible Chhath celebrations for visitors are at Rani Pokhari in Kathmandu, but the Terai experience is unmatched in scale. The Janakpur and Birgunj areas attract enormous crowds. Travel early as roads into river towns become gridlocked from midday onwards.
