Budhanilkantha Reclining Vishnu Guide
The Budhanilkantha shrine north of Kathmandu houses a five-metre reclining Vishnu carved from a single block of black stone, floating in a water tank — one of the most remarkable sculptures in South Asia.
Overview
Budhanilkantha (sometimes called Narayanthan) lies at the foot of the Shivapuri hills, about nine kilometres north of central Kathmandu. The centrepiece is a five-metre reclining figure of Vishnu carved from a single block of black basalt, resting in a rectangular stone tank filled with water. The image dates to approximately the seventh century CE and depicts the god in the cosmic sleep (Yoga Nidra) from which he will awaken to save the universe. The sculpture is considered a masterpiece of Licchavi-period stone carving.
Non-Hindus may view the statue from the steps surrounding the tank but are not permitted inside the inner shrine area. The surrounding complex has smaller shrines, pilgrims bathing in peripheral tanks, and vendors selling flowers and prasad. The atmosphere is calm on weekday mornings; weekends and the Haribodhi Ekadashi festival (October-November) bring large crowds.
Getting there is easy — taxis and local buses run from Ratna Park bus stand in Kathmandu. The journey takes 25 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. Entry is free for all visitors. There is no formal dress code but modest clothing is respectful.
FAQ
Why could Nepal's kings not visit Budhanilkantha?
According to a traditional belief, the king of Nepal is an incarnation of Vishnu. Visiting his own image sleeping in the water tank would be inauspicious. This custom was observed by Shah dynasty kings and remains a point of cultural note, though Nepal is now a republic.
