Overview

Boudhanath Stupa rises dramatically from the eastern edge of Kathmandu, its giant white dome and painted all-seeing eyes watching over the surrounding maze of monasteries, cafes, and thangka shops. The stupa is the spiritual heart of Nepal's Tibetan community and a globally recognised centre for Vajrayana Buddhist practice. Pilgrims circle the mandala-shaped base clockwise from dawn to dusk, spinning prayer wheels and murmuring mantras.

The best time to visit for meditation is either at sunrise before the crowds arrive or at dusk when butter lamps are lit and monks chant in the surrounding monasteries. Many monasteries offer short drop-in meditation sessions for visitors โ€” check notice boards around the stupa for current schedules. The Kopan, Shechen, and Jamchen Lhakhang monasteries all have regular programmes.

Entrance to the stupa area costs NPR 400 for foreign visitors. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as the kora (circumambulation path) can be wet after rain. Roof-top restaurants around the stupa offer excellent elevated views and are good spots for quiet reflection between circuits.
