Bird Watching Koshi Tappu: 500 Species in Eastern Nepal
Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is Nepal's premier birding destination, with over 500 recorded species in a compact wetland reserve at the base of the Himalayas. This guide covers all the essentials.
Overview
Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve in eastern Nepal's Sunsari District sits where the Koshi River debouches from the Himalayas onto the Terai plains, creating an internationally important wetland. The reserve covers just 175 sq km but holds an extraordinary 500-plus bird species -- more than many entire countries. It is a Ramsar wetland site (designated internationally important) and is the only protected area in Nepal's eastern Terai, making it a critical stopover for Central Asian Flyway migratory birds.
Key Species by Season
Winter (October to March) brings massive concentrations of migratory ducks, geese, and waders from Siberia and Central Asia. The Koshi Barrage impoundment area hosts thousands of ruddy shelducks, bar-headed geese, common pochards, and ferruginous ducks. Rare species regularly recorded include baer's pochard, pallas's fish eagle, and spot-billed pelican.
Resident year-round species include sarus crane (the world's tallest flying bird), bengal florican, swamp francolin, and eight species of kingfisher. The riverine forest strips hold brown fish owl, Indian scops owl, and collared falconet.
Summer (April to August) brings breeding waterbirds and forest species. The swamp francolin, one of Nepal's rarest birds, breeds in the tall grass areas east of the barrage.

Practical Birding Tips
Dawn starts at 5:30 am from the Koshi Barrage observation point are essential -- activity peaks in the first two hours of light. Hire a local birding guide from Kusaha village (approx NPR 2,000 per day) who knows the reserve's seasonal hotspots. A spotting scope of 60x magnification is worthwhile for distant waterbirds on the barrage.
Entry permit: NPR 1,000 for foreign nationals. The reserve is 5 km east of Kusaha on the Biratnagar-Dharan highway. Book a Sajilo cab from Biratnagar Airport to reach the reserve gate in about 35 minutes.
