Biratnagar: Gateway to Eastern Nepal
Biratnagar is Nepal's second largest city and the commercial capital of the east, a functional base for exploring the eastern Terai and the gateway to hill districts beyond.
Overview
Biratnagar sits in the Koshi Province near the Indian border, connected to Kathmandu by air (40 minutes) and by road along the East-West Highway (about 8 hours). Unlike Nepal's tourist-circuit cities, Biratnagar is a genuine commercial and industrial centre with jute mills, textile factories, and one of Nepal's most active border crossings at Jogbani-Biratnagar.
The city itself holds few conventional tourist sights, but as a base it is excellently positioned. Dharan, the beautiful hill city, is 34km away. Ilam tea gardens are 3-4 hours north. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, one of Asia's finest wetland bird sanctuaries, is about 50km west. The border crossing to Jogbani in India is used frequently by overland travellers moving between Nepal and northeast India.
Biratnagar's market area has a busy energy particular to Terai border towns โ a mix of Maithili, Tharu, Pahadi, and Indian commercial culture all operating at once. The Birat Chowk central square and the main bazaar streets repay an evening of aimless walking.
Sajilo provides reliable city transport in Biratnagar, useful when navigating a city where the streets are not always on digital maps.

FAQ
Is Biratnagar a destination in itself or a transit point?
Primarily a transit and logistics hub. Most travellers use it as a gateway to Dharan, Ilam, or Koshi Tappu rather than spending multiple days in the city itself.
What is the closest airport to Biratnagar?
Biratnagar Airport serves the city directly with multiple daily flights to Kathmandu operated by several domestic carriers.
