Bengal Florican Nepal: Seeing One of the World's Rarest Birds
The Bengal florican is one of the world's most endangered birds, with fewer than 1,000 individuals remaining. Nepal's Chitwan and Bardia grasslands hold a critical portion of the global population.
Overview
The Bengal florican (Houbaropsis bengalensis) is classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN, with global population estimates of fewer than 1,000 birds. Nepal holds approximately 300 to 400 individuals -- nearly half the world population -- in the tall grasslands (terai of Chitwan and Bardia national parks). This makes Nepal the single most important country for this species' survival, giving any sighting extraordinary value.
Display Season
The best time to see Bengal floricans is April to June, during the male's extraordinary display flight. Males jump vertically 5 to 10 metres from their grassland territory with black body and white wings fully extended, calling loudly to attract females. This display is repeated dozens of times per hour and can be seen from 500 metres distance across open grassland.
The display sites (called "leks") within Chitwan are known to park naturalists. Specific grassland blocks east of Kasara and in the Sauraha buffer zone are reliable lek locations. A jeep dropped at the grassland edge at 6 am allows 20 to 30 minutes of observation before heat causes displays to cease.
Conservation Threats
Grassland conversion to agriculture outside protected areas is the primary threat. Within parks, invasive species such as parthenium weed are replacing native tall grass habitat. The Department of National Parks conducts annual grassland management burns and mechanical clearing specifically to maintain florican habitat.

FAQ
How rare is it to see a Bengal florican in Nepal?
During April to June at the right grassland sites in Chitwan, sightings during display season are relatively reliable with a good local guide. Outside display season, the species is genuinely cryptic and sightings are rare even for expert birders.
What is the best grassland in Chitwan for Bengal florican?
The Icharni grassland block east of Kasara Durbar is historically the most reliable site. Ask your naturalist guide specifically about current display activity before booking a grassland excursion.
Does Bardia National Park also have Bengal floricans?
Yes. Bardia holds a smaller population in the Babai Valley grasslands. The species is less frequently seen here due to thicker vegetation, but dedicated searches during April to June are productive.
