Begnas Lake: The Quiet Side of Pokhara
Begnas Lake, 14km east of Pokhara, offers the serene lake experience that Phewa Lake used to provide before the restaurants arrived. It is worth the short detour.
Overview
Begnas Lake is the second largest lake in the Pokhara Valley, separated from the city by a low ridge and consequently receiving a small fraction of its visitors. The lake is fringed with reed beds, farmland, and forested hills. Local fishermen work nets from narrow wooden boats in the early morning. A simple restaurant strip along the eastern shore serves freshly caught fish with mountain views that rival anything in Lakeside.
The lake is part of a protected area that also includes Rupa Lake, a smaller wetland just to the south. Both lakes are important for migratory waterbirds; egrets, cormorants, kingfishers, and ducks congregate here in numbers rarely seen at the more disturbed Phewa Lake.
Rowing boats are available for hire at the ghat. The paddle to the far western shore and back takes about two hours of gentle effort and delivers views of the Annapurna Himalaya reflected in the water when conditions cooperate. The surrounding hills are criss-crossed with trails into Gurung villages that make for easy half-day walking without guides or permits.
Begnas is 14km from Lakeside, about 25 minutes by road. Use Sajilo to avoid the hassle of negotiating a return taxi from a spot where drivers know you are stuck.

FAQ
Is there accommodation at Begnas Lake?
A small number of lakeside lodges and homestays operate near the ghat. Staying the night here rather than in Lakeside Pokhara is a genuinely different experience โ very quiet after dark.
Can I visit both Begnas and Rupa Lakes in the same trip?
Yes. A short walk (about 20 minutes) or bicycle ride connects the two lakes through farming villages. A combined visit makes a good full-day outing from Pokhara.
