Bardia National Park: Nepal's Wild West Wilderness
Bardia offers raw, uncrowded jungle safari experiences with excellent tiger and dolphin sightings in far-western Nepal.
Overview
Bardia National Park lies in the far-western Terai and covers 968 square kilometres of pristine sal forest and alluvial grassland along the Karnali River. Far less visited than Chitwan, Bardia offers a genuinely wild experience where you can walk for hours without encountering another tourist. The park is considered Nepal's best location for tiger sightings due to high prey density and relatively low human disturbance.
Wildlife Highlights
Bardia supports the country's largest population of wild elephants โ around 90 individuals roam freely without the constraints of a breeding programme. The Karnali River corridor hosts the endangered Gangetic river dolphin, one of the world's freshwater dolphin species, which can be observed from the riverbanks at dawn. Swamp deer (barasingha) gather in large herds in the grasslands, and blackbuck antelope sprint across open meadows near the park boundary.
Tiger Sightings
Bardia has earned a reputation as Nepal's premier tiger destination. A 2022 census recorded over 125 tigers in the park, and the wide Babai Valley offers exceptional sighting opportunities on walking safaris. Tiger tracking with expert guides who read pugmarks, scratch marks, and alarm calls of spotted deer can be extraordinarily rewarding, even on trips where the cat itself remains elusive.
Getting There
Bardia is approximately 10 hours by tourist bus from Kathmandu or a short flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj followed by a 3-hour drive. Most visitors stay in Thakurdwara village, which serves as the main safari hub with a range of lodges from budget guesthouses to luxury tented camps.

FAQ
Q: How does Bardia compare to Chitwan for a safari?
Bardia offers fewer tourists, larger territory, and arguably better tiger encounters. Chitwan has more infrastructure, easier access from Kathmandu, and reliable rhino sightings. Travellers with extra time benefit greatly from combining both parks.
Q: Can I see Gangetic dolphins in Bardia?
Yes. The Karnali River near the park boundary is one of the best places in Nepal to spot Gangetic river dolphins. Early-morning boat trips or riverside walks at dawn offer the highest probability of sightings, typically between November and April when water levels are lower.
Q: What accommodation is available in Bardia?
Options range from basic village guesthouses at NPR 800-1,500 per night to eco-lodges and luxury tented camps ranging from NPR 8,000 to 25,000 per night including meals and safaris. Booking in advance is recommended from October to December.
