Bardia National Park: Wild Nepal
Bardia in the far western Terai is Nepal's largest national park and arguably its wildest, offering tiger sightings in a landscape with a fraction of Chitwan's visitor numbers.
Why Bardia?
Bardia National Park covers 968 square kilometres of sal forest, riverine grassland, and the Karnali River system. While Chitwan is better known internationally, Bardia offers higher chances of tiger sightings (some operators report significantly higher encounter rates) in a setting without the visitor density. The park also holds wild elephants, one-horned rhinoceros (reintroduced from Chitwan), Gangetic river dolphins, and large bird counts.
Getting There
Bardia is in Bardiya District in the Lumbini Province, about 450km southwest of Kathmandu. The most practical routes are: fly to Nepalgunj (the nearest airport, 2 hours from the park) or take the overnight bus from Kathmandu on the Mahendra Highway. Thakurdwara village on the park's eastern edge is the main tourist base.
What to Expect
Wildlife safaris in Bardia operate differently from Chitwan. The park's size and lower visitor numbers mean encounters feel genuinely wild. Jeep safaris, guided walking safaris, and dugout canoe trips on the Karnali are the main activity formats. Walking safaris here go deep into the sal forest where bird noise, large footprints, and the occasional distant alarm call build genuine suspense.
The Karnali River system is habitat for the endangered Gangetic river dolphin. Canoe trips in the early morning have a good chance of spotting these smooth-grey mammals surfacing in the current. Marsh mugger and gharial crocodiles are also present.
Planning this trip? ๐
Don't stress about transport or guides. Sajilo offers verified cabs, luxury tourist buses, and expert guides across Nepal.
Thakurdwara Village
The base village of Thakurdwara is home to Tharu communities whose traditional round houses with thatched roofs sit within walking distance of the park boundary. The Tharu Cultural Museum here is small but well-presented. Evening walks through the village in the golden hour, with the forest edge just beyond, have an atmosphere of genuine remoteness.
Sajilo does not yet cover Bardia directly, but the company connects travellers with ground transport in Nepalgunj for onward journeys into the park area.
Best Time to Visit
February through May offers the best wildlife visibility as vegetation is dry and animals concentrate around water sources. October and November are also excellent. Avoid June through September when the park partially closes due to monsoon flooding.
FAQ
Is Bardia really better than Chitwan for tigers?
Several reputable operators report better tiger encounter rates in Bardia, though wildlife is never guaranteed. Bardia's lower foot traffic means animals are less habituated to humans, making sightings feel more authentic.
Is Bardia infrastructure adequate for comfortable travel?
Yes, though more limited than Chitwan. Good mid-range and budget lodges operate in Thakurdwara. The tradeoff of fewer amenities for more genuine wilderness is the point.
How many days should I plan for Bardia?
Three to four days minimum. The first day in a new habitat is always adjustment. Days two and three are when your eyes attune to the landscape and encounters become more frequent.
