Assamese Macaque Nepal: Mid-Hill Primates of the Forest

The Assamese macaque is Nepal's most widespread mountain macaque, living in mixed forest from 1,000 to 3,500 m elevation. Langtang and Annapurna treks regularly pass through their territory.

Overview

The Assamese macaque (Macaca assamensis) is a medium-sized monkey with a thick brownish coat suited to cool mountain forests. It ranges across Nepal's hills from 1,000 to 3,500 m altitude and is one of the most frequently encountered primates on popular trekking routes. Unlike the rhesus macaque, which is often associated with human settlements and temples, Assamese macaques prefer undisturbed forest and are less habituated to human presence.

Key Viewing Locations

The Annapurna Circuit between Besisahar and Manang passes through prime Assamese macaque habitat in the lower valleys. Troops of 10 to 30 animals are commonly seen foraging in oaks and rhododendrons between 1,500 and 2,500 m. The Modi Khola Valley on the Annapurna Sanctuary trek also has resident troops in the forest sections below Chhomrong.

In Langtang, Assamese macaques occupy the band of forest between 2,000 and 3,000 m, particularly in the sal and oak forest sections between Bamboo and Lama Hotel. Dawn is the best viewing time before troops disperse to forage.

Social Structure

Assamese macaques live in multi-male, multi-female troops. Males form coalitions with other males for shared infant care -- an unusual primate behaviour where males babysit and protect infants regardless of paternity. This reduces infanticide and increases troop cohesion.

FAQ

How do I distinguish an Assamese macaque from a rhesus macaque?
Assamese macaques are larger, have a longer tail relative to body size, and a paler brownish-grey coat compared to the darker, more olive-green rhesus macaque. Assamese macaques are also generally found at higher elevations in less disturbed forest.

Are macaques dangerous to trekkers?
They are not typically aggressive, but adult males will threaten if food is offered or packs are too close. Keep food sealed and do not make eye contact with dominant males.

Do macaques in Nepal carry diseases?
Like all wild primates, macaques can carry herpes B virus. No touching or close contact is advised. Bites are extremely rare but require immediate medical attention.
